What is Maths Vault?

A short, factual definition — then who it is for, what is free, and what it does not do.

Maths Vault is a UK secondary mathematics platform for teachers and students. It maps resources to White Rose small steps for Years 7–11 and to GCSE specifications used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Teachers with an account can generate worksheets and present lessons in Vault Viewer, a slide deck that embeds live tools rather than static PowerPoint screenshots. Students use free step-by-step calculators and daily retrieval practice (Keystones) in the browser with no account. The platform is independent of White Rose Education and is not an awarding body: it does not set, mark or certificate GCSE examinations. It is founded by teacher and Edexcel examiner Jon Glover and is not THE MATHS VAULT LTD (Companies House 15845934), which is a different company.

Is it free?

Student tools on the students hub are free and need no sign-up. Keystones, the blog, football maths, themed quizzes and best-buy questions are also public. Some teacher PDFs on /free/ are email-gated. Teacher generation uses a free tier with daily limits; paid plans extend those limits. Unlimited classroom generation is not free.

Exam boards

Methods match UK GCSE classroom practice for AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Other boards taught in UK schools often use the same methods. Maths Vault does not claim exclusive or official status with any board.

Algorithmic working vs AI

Public calculators are algorithmic: the same inputs produce the same UK-method steps. That is deliberate, so working is not invented by a chatbot. Some signed-in teacher tools use AI (including Flow, RanR, CRAFT and Career Paths) and those requests count towards a monthly quota.

What Maths Vault does not do

Common questions

What is Maths Vault?

Maths Vault is a UK secondary mathematics platform for teachers and students. It maps resources to White Rose small steps for Years 7–11 and to GCSE specifications used by AQA, Edexcel and OCR. Student calculators, Keystones daily retrieval, the blog, and several practice pages are free and need no account. Some teacher PDFs on the free hub ask for an email. Is Maths Vault aligned to White Rose Maths?

Maths Vault maps classroom resources to White Rose’s published small steps for Years 7–11. It is independent of White Rose Education and is not a White Rose product. You do not need a White Rose subscription to use the public student tools.

Which exam boards does Maths Vault cover?

Walkthroughs and student tools use UK methods that appear on AQA, Edexcel and OCR GCSE Mathematics papers. The site is not an official exam-board partner and does not award qualifications.

Is it for KS3 or GCSE?

The main platform is for Key Stage 3 and GCSE (Key Stage 4), Years 7–11. Primary Maths Vault is a separate public landing for Nursery–Year 6.

Is the working AI-generated?

Public student calculators show algorithmic working: the steps are produced by programmed methods, not by a large language model. Some teacher tools (for example Flow and CRAFT) do use AI and count towards a monthly quota. Those apps require login.

Do I need an account?

Not for the student hub, Keystones, public calculators, the blog, or the Vault Viewer sample lesson. You need an account to generate, save and brand teacher resources, and to author Vault Viewer lessons.
